Called Inga yesterday to say thank you for her hospitality and to tell her that I got home safely.
Got the Surface to work with the external mouse, monitor, and keyboard. Also bought the $9.99 game Hydro Thunder and it too works well with the xbox controller.
Good food and a lot of sleep and all is well again.
